Are Some HIFU Machines Better Than Others? What Actually Matters

It's a fair question, and the honest answer is: it depends less on brand and more on what a machine can actually do. Some machines are built for one job, facial tightening, others are built to handle fat reduction and body contouring too. The right choice comes down to matching the machine's real capability to what you actually want to treat.
Why "better" isn't one-size-fits-all
A single-depth HIFU machine can deliver real results for one specific job, but it can't necessarily do everything. Facial tightening happens at a different depth in the skin than fat reduction or body contouring does. A machine built to treat only one of those depths well isn't worse, it's just narrower. The question isn't "which brand is best," it's "does this machine actually reach the depth my treatment needs."
What actually separates HIFU machines
- Depth range. Entry-level machines often work at one or two fixed depths. More capable machines offer a genuine range, from fine surface work through to deep body fat layers.
- MPT vs standard HIFU. MPT (Macro and Micro Focused Ultrasound) lets you set depth and energy independently rather than using one fixed setting, which is what makes treating multiple goals on one machine possible in the first place.
- Face-only vs face-and-body capability. Some machines are built purely for facial work. Others, ours included, are built with a genuine range of cartridges so one machine covers both.
Matching depth to what you're actually treating
This is where it gets concrete. Our UltraTherapy MPT range uses 7 real cartridge depths, each built for a different job, not one generic setting stretched across every treatment:
| Depth | What it's actually for |
|---|---|
| 1.5mm (epidermis) | Fine lines, slight pigmentation, surface-level work |
| 2.0mm (eye area) | Dark circles, eye bags, fine lines around the eyes |
| 3.0mm (mid-dermis) | Activating collagen, improving skin elasticity |
| 4.5mm (SMAS layer) | The same deep muscle layer targeted in a surgical facelift, real facial lifting and tightening |
| 6.0mm (body) | Larger areas like arms and thighs, tightening skin and improving cellulite appearance |
| 9.0mm (body) | Loose abdominal skin, improving overall body contours |
| 13mm (body) | Thicker-fat areas like flanks, back and thighs, comprehensive slimming and shaping |
A machine that only reaches 1.5mm to 4.5mm can do real facial work, but it physically can't reach the depths needed for body contouring. That's not a quality difference, it's a capability one.
Why one multi-depth machine beats buying several single-purpose ones
Buying a machine that only covers one part of this range means buying a second (or third) machine later when a client asks for something you can't currently offer. A machine built across the full depth range, like our UltraTherapy 13D and 15D MPT models, means one investment covers face, eye area and body from day one, not a growing collection of single-purpose devices.
What this actually means when you're choosing a machine
Don't ask "which HIFU machine is best" in the abstract, ask what depths a machine actually reaches, and whether that matches the treatment menu you want to offer. See our full buying guide for the complete checklist, or compare our range to see exactly which depths each of our machines includes.
